Tenant Creek Falls

Stream Tenant Creek

Greater watershed West Stony Creek → Sacandaga River → Hudson River → New York Bay

Height Probably 8m/26ft or so

Form Gentle, multi-segmented slide

Volume Bubbling

General location southern Adirondack Mountains, New York

Specific location Kind of in the middle of nowhere. Somewhere in the Indian Lake area there's an unsealed road that goes off a state highway (I want to say it's the 7?), follows West Stony Creek up, gets rougher and rougher and eventually just stops. That's where the trail starts.

Trail access Fairly easy and straightforward to the main falls. Beware of side paths leading off into private property.

Bonus waterfalls Two small waterfalls are further upstream—follow the trail for about a mile or so. Only worth the hike if lighting conditions are good.

We found this one kind of by chance. Someone pointed us in its general direction from the B&B where we were staying. Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure how to get back to it, though I could probably locate it with the aid of a map. The nearest town is Northville; look for Hope Falls Road. Good luck.

Not much to say—small, scenic, big pool, you can probably bring the kids here—and the two upper drops are gentle, but so is the hike to them. I'm not sure you'd want to make a special trip to visit this waterfall, but if you're in the area it's worth a visit. Photographers, you'll want an overcast day, or early morning/late evening light. The sun ruined most of my photos, including all of the ones of the upper of the two small waterfalls, which is a broad stairstep cascade into an enormous pool, probably about 3m/10ft high. The lower of the two waterfalls was half in sun and half in shade; I got an isolation of the shade half. (It's probably 2.5m/8ft and cascades over many mini-ledges in a rather scenic fashion.) For the main falls, due to the easy accessibility to both sides of the creek, there are probably dozens of viable compositions. It's worth spending an hour or two if the light's favourable.
