Hamilton Falls

Stream Cobb Brook

Greater watershed West River → Connecticut River → Long Island Sound

Height Tallish, I'm guessing 28-30m/92-98ft

Form Two steep slides separated by a small pool, with possibly another drop above

Volume Splashy, potentially thundery

General location Jamaica State Park, southern half of Vermont

Specific location I think the town is also called Jamaica? It's the one after Townshend as you drive up the West River

Trail access There's a 10 minute trail from the top (somewhat steep); we came over on the fairly easy 1 1/2 hour trail from the state park

Bonus waterfall Possibly a bit too far from this fall to qualify, but on the way back out to Brattleboro and I-91, in or around a township called... Dummerston I think?, I spotted the small waterfall in picture #3 along the road. It's probably about 5m/16ft high but nicely proportioned. Just don't get run over while you look at it—the road's narrow and there is no real place to pull over

The waterfalls of Vermont tend to be on the small and intimate side; this one is one of the biggest. At high flows I imagine it would be genuinely impressive, but at normal flows (which I think is what we had judging from the other photos I've seen on the web) it actually loses a little compared to some of the smaller, "prettier" waterfalls in the state—that big open rockface, presumably scoured clean by floods, doesn't enhance the scenic qualities of the fall at lower flows. Maybe if it got covered in a layer of moss or something. Still, this is a nice waterfall and quite enjoyable to explore close up when the flows are safe (don't forget your togs).

We didn't know better and hiked in the long way, though that was a rather pleasant hike all things considered (good for families—easy, well graded, arrives at a decent swimming pool), but judging from the number of people coming down from the other side, this is a waterfall you're unlikely to have to yourself if it's a nice day. It's also not easy to photograph on a sunny afternoon. I was lucky in that a cloud passing over the sun for about five minutes happened to coincide with no one being close enough to the falls to get in the way of my photos, but I was also there for about 2 hours, so be prepared to wait.
